RARE EARTH ELEMENTS

DESCRIPTION
Lutetium is a very difficult metal to isolate in its purest form and is relatively scarce on the planet, although it is more abundant than some precious metals such as silver and gold. The few applications it had until a few years ago and the limited production made it (comparatively speaking), an extremely expensive metal.
CHARACTERISTICS
Lutetium a silvery-white, hard, dense metal. It is soft and ductile, it exists in trivalent state in compounds, it is harder and denser than all lanthanides, it is stable in air It reacts slowly with water, but dissolves rapidly in acids. Lutetium is little used outside research. One of its few commercial uses is as a catalyst for cracking hydrocarbons in oil refineries. Lutetium has no known biological role.
Being such a complex element, with such a difficult extraction and having so little abundance, Lutetium is rarely used in human activities. It also finds applications as an impurity sensor in the metallurgical industry. It is employed in producing dentures. The oil-producing industries, due to the nature of their processes, are the ones that mostly use Lutetium. Some lutetium salts are used in the manufacture of electronic components and therefore can be found in equipment such as color televisions and fluorescent lamps. It is also common to use lutetium salts to produce high-quality glass catalysts and polishers.
